Toulouse have set a €40m price for Dayann Methalie after rejecting Sunderland’s €33m bid, with Newcastle United and other clubs also interested.

Sunderland Face €40m Demand for Toulouse Defender Dayann Methalie

Toulouse’s €40m asking price has turned Dayann Methalie’s proposed move into a test of Sunderland’s resolve. The Black Cats have already had four bids rejected, with their latest reported offer at €33m. Newcastle United, Bayer Leverkusen and Lille are also linked with the 20-year-old left-back, giving Toulouse more than one potential buyer to point to as it holds its position.

According to local newspaper La Dépêche, Sunderland’s latest offer came after a series of rejected bids and a changing valuation from Toulouse. The club initially sought €30m when Sunderland offered around €25m late last month. After rejecting the fourth bid, Toulouse raised its demand to €35m; the latest reported figure is €5m above yesterday’s reported price.

That sequence makes the negotiation difficult to read as a simple gap between buyer and seller. Sunderland has raised its offers, but Toulouse has also moved its target upward. The latest bid is close enough to keep talks in focus, yet the reported €40m demand leaves a clear question: is either side prepared to change course?

Toulouse set a firm price

Sunderland

Toulouse president Olivier Cloarec has made the club’s position plain: “it’s €40m or nothing”. Sunderland would need to add €7m to its latest offer to meet that figure. If a sale at that price goes through, it would set a club record, making the decision about more than the immediate fee: Toulouse would be weighing a major return against the value of keeping a young player it developed.

Methalie came through Toulouse’s academy and has made 30 first-team appearances. He isn’t expected to stay, but the club says it will only let him leave if a suitor meets its valuation. That stance gives Toulouse a clear negotiating line, though it doesn’t tell us whether €40m is a final figure or an opening position designed to test the market.

The reported Ligue 1 figures offer some context for the interest, while leaving plenty unanswered about how Toulouse values the player. Methalie made 27 appearances in the 2025/26 league season, started 22 times and played 1,882 minutes. He scored twice and recorded one assist. Those totals establish a meaningful first-team role, but they don’t by themselves explain a record asking price; clubs typically weigh age, position, development potential and the seller’s willingness to part with a player alongside current output.

Several clubs are watching

Newcastle are among the interested clubs, while Lille have renewed their pursuit of the France Under-21 international. Bayer Leverkusen are also in the picture. The report doesn’t say whether any of them are prepared to match Toulouse’s €40m demand, and it’s unclear if Sunderland will return with a higher bid.

That uncertainty matters. Reported interest can strengthen a seller’s hand, but it doesn’t establish that rival clubs have made offers or intend to do so. For Sunderland, the competition creates pressure to decide how much Methalie is worth to its plans; for Toulouse, the names linked with him help sustain the argument that it needn’t accept a lower fee. Neither point guarantees a deal.

The numbers here are underwhelming as a guide to the full decision. Appearances, starts and goals show a player already involved at senior level, but they reveal little about the qualities Sunderland values or how Methalie might fit its side. The price is therefore being negotiated in a wider context than this season’s statistical return alone.

The €7m gap leaves the next move open

For now, Sunderland appear to remain in front, but the reported interest from other clubs gives Toulouse room to hold its valuation. A €7m gap is substantial enough to matter in a transfer negotiation, especially when the seller has publicly set a firm threshold. And yet Sunderland has already made four bids, suggesting the club has continued to pursue the deal despite repeated rejections.

If you’re following this as a measure of Sunderland’s transfer priorities, the next bid will be more revealing than the list of interested clubs. A higher offer could show that the club is willing to pay close to Toulouse’s record figure; a pause would leave the seller to consider whether another suitor can make the valuation real. Here’s the thing: until a rival bid or a new Sunderland offer is reported, the €40m demand remains Toulouse’s position, not evidence that a deal is imminent.

This is more significant than it looks for the negotiation itself. Toulouse has turned Methalie’s departure into a question of price, while Sunderland must decide whether its latest offer is near its limit or simply another step in talks. The next move will show whether the €7m difference can be bridged. Or whether it can’t.
