Liverpool’s need for a Virgil van Dijk successor makes Luka Vuskovic a plausible target, but Brighton’s reported £100 million valuation and his long contract are major hurdles.
The Football Whispers Index scores every transfer rumour across five weighted factors. Read how it works here. The price is the first obstacle
Brighton signed Vuskovic from Tottenham for a club-record £46 million on 14 July 2026. Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider reported on 24 October that the club now values him at £100 million. That’s a huge jump, and Brighton have little reason to negotiate in a hurry: his contract runs until 30 June 2031.
Transfermarkt put his value at €65 million on 7 October, the highest figure of his career and well above Brighton’s reported purchase price. Those figures use different currencies and reflect different assessments, but they show the gap Liverpool would have to bridge. The reported £100 million valuation is the key negotiating hurdle.
Liverpool have the financial capacity to consider a major fee: Deloitte’s latest Football Money League ranked them as the Premier League’s highest-earning club. Capacity, though, doesn’t mean willingness to pay Brighton’s price. The Index gives financial viability 14 out of 25.
A real need, with other options already in place
Van Dijk’s approaching contract expiry makes succession planning an immediate concern. Liverpool signed 21-year-old Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes this summer, while 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury. Vuskovic would add another young centre-back to that picture.
He is 19, stands 6ft 4in and scored six goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances on loan at Hamburg last season. That profile helps explain Liverpool’s interest. Yet Jacquet is already a Liverpool starter, so Vuskovic wouldn’t necessarily arrive with a clear path into the team. Fabrizio Romano’s comments on Liverpool’s plans on 21 and 22 October focused on midfield targets Lamine Camara and Alex Scott, with no mention of Vuskovic.
The case for Liverpool is stronger than the case for the player’s motivation. Vuskovic has started regularly for Brighton since joining in July. Opta rank Liverpool sixth in the world on 95.9 and Brighton eighth on 94.6, a relatively narrow gap. There’s no reported comment from Vuskovic about wanting a move to Anfield. The Index scores Liverpool’s need at 17 out of 20, but player motivation at 8 out of 15.
Brighton can afford to wait
Brighton gave Vuskovic a deal through June 2031 when he signed on 14 July. Football Insider says the club won’t sell cheaply and believes he is already worth £100 million. That gives Brighton considerable negotiating strength, even if the reported fee proves optimistic.
There’s a precedent for business between the clubs: Alexis Mac Allister moved from Brighton to Liverpool in 2023 and remains at Anfield. But one successful transfer doesn’t tell us whether Brighton will accept a lower price for Vuskovic. The Index assigns the selling-club incentive 11 out of 20.
The reporting remains the weak link
The link rests on two reports. Football Insider’s O’Rourke named Liverpool and Real Madrid on 24 October; TEAMtalk had reported on 11 October that Chelsea and Liverpool were interested, alongside Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Neither report cites a bid, approach or talks with Brighton. The Index gives market momentum 7 out of 20.
That’s the part of the story to treat cautiously. A list of interested clubs can suggest a market is forming, but it doesn’t show that anyone is negotiating. The available reports also don’t explain how the £100 million valuation was established or whether Brighton would consider a lower offer.
Possible, but a long way from a deal
Liverpool have a sound reason to monitor Vuskovic, and his age and performances make him a credible long-term option. That’s more significant than a random transfer link. Still, the reported interest has no concrete step behind it, and Brighton’s contract position makes a bargain unlikely.
A move becomes more plausible if Van Dijk leaves when his contract expires in June 2027 and Liverpool decide Vuskovic is the right successor at a fee they can accept. It could fade if Brighton hold to their reported £100 million valuation, another interested club acts first, or Liverpool prioritise midfield. For now, **Possible** is a fair verdict—provided you read it as a measure of fit, not evidence that negotiations are underway.
